You’ve seen it on the shelves. You’ve heard it thrown around in cafés. “Single origin.” Sounds fancy, right? Like something served in a crystal goblet by someone with a moustache and opinions on water pH.
But let’s strip it back. What actually is single origin coffee? Why does it matter?
So, what does “single origin” even mean?
In short, it’s coffee that comes from one place. That could be:
-
A single country (e.g. Ethiopia),
-
A single region (e.g. Yirgacheffe),
-
Or even a specific farm or cooperative (e.g. Finca La Esperanza).
The idea is: same soil, same climate, same growing conditions = more distinct, traceable flavour. And tasty tones that are unique to that sole place.
It’s like wine. A Shiraz from the Barossa tastes different to one from the Hunter, because the land shapes the final product. Same goes for coffee.
Why drink single origin?
Because it’s interesting. It’s expressive. And sometimes, it’s just insanely delicious. And hey, we love our blends to death, but if you're a daily-drinker, leaning more into those fruity, floral and bright notes can be a lovely pace change.
Single origins are like the solo artists of the coffee world. They’re not trying to blend in. They’re bold, unique, and not afraid to be a bit fruity, floral, or funky. That’s why we tend to steer them toward black coffee—filter, espresso, V60—where you can really taste the origin’s character.
You might get:
-
Ethiopia – berries, florals, and that “I didn’t know coffee could taste like this” vibe.
-
Colombia – balanced, sweet, juicy. Crowd-pleasers with depth.
-
Kenya – bright, citrusy, sometimes tomato-y (sounds weird, tastes wild).
-
Brazil – chocolatey, nutty, low acidity. Sweet comfort in a cup.
Should you use it with milk?
You can, but know this: single origins are usually roasted lighter to highlight nuance, which means they don’t always stand up to milk like a rich, chocolatey blend would. If you're into brighter, fruit-forward lattes, give it a crack. Just don’t expect the same smooth ride you’d get from our Drake Blend.
Our approach?
We roast singles to bring out their best natural flavours—whether that’s sparkling acidity, jammy sweetness, or something you can’t quite put your finger on (but you know you like it). They’re not everyday drivers, but they’re wicked weekend brews. Try them black first. Then play around.
We keep it simple: no gatekeeping, no jargon, just good coffee that tells a story.
